So what are the benefits of the wing chun dummy?
It was many years ago when I first saw the Wing Chun wooden dummy in a martial arts movie. Though I can no longer remember the movie or who was in it, I certainly have not forgotten the curiousity that came out of that viewing.
“What is this wooden thing?” was the thought running through my mind.
Wing Chun practictioner Yoshi Kundagawa explains that the wing chun dummy is a tool designed to be used to increase power, strength and overall ability in any fighting arena.
After using the wing chun dummy consistently, in conjunction with watching a dummy training DVD, Kundagawa felt stronger within days. Within weeks not only had his strength increased, as did his endurance and he soon developed motivation to train daily.

Those of us who are familiar with the Wing Chun dummy would know that the wooden dummy is used by Wing Chun practitioners to develop timing, arm and leg co-ordination, strength, flow, accuracy of speed and distance, and has many more physical and mental applications.
For the uninitiated Wing Chun (also referred to as “Wing Tsun” or “Ving Tsun” depending on who you ask) is a martial art dating back to Ancient China. The dates, specific origins, and timelines are verbal heresay and there are many articles on the history available on the internet if you’re interested. Common legend points to the originator as being a woman by the name of Ng Mui.
What is apparent is that the practise of wing chun is popular today and practical application and dedicated study to the art contributes to physical, mental and spiritual strength and development.
Legendary martial artist and movie star Bruce Lee studied Wing Chun under the guidance of Yip Man prior to developing Jeet Kune Do.
The Wing Chun dummy can be a powerful tool and it is important to note that like all tools it must be used with care and as intended. Many books and instructional DVDs are available on this topic.
One DVD that I think every serious wing chun practitioner must have, is the Wing Chun Dummy DVD. It is an excellent video guide and covers 116 moves of the Wing Chun Dummy Form as demonstrated by Alan Goldberg, a master of Wing Chun with 36 years of experience under the Yip Man/Jiu Wan lineage.
I think this is an absolute must have for someone who really is serious about developing their technique with the Wing Chun dummy.
